I watch my animals (my pets), and listen to wild animals trying to decifer musical tastes..
Only very rarely would my cat notice the stereo (lots of drums).
And my dog only notices other dogs (on tape, Thanx Ween).

I met a Dr. who was studying bird's "ear" for music, he said a Mocking bird has a taste for a 44 note scale, and not only
does this bird have an unique scale of sounds produced, to divide the 44 notes into octaves, you must think in a spiral....
Now, he didn't say anything about human scales, but, truth be told, as anyone will see if they study it, we must also place our
notes in a spiral in order to really see what is happening. -

Thu, May 24, 2007 - 7:44 PMOur late family dog Jock used to dance on his hind legs & scoot on his back to music we called that move "the jock". He would dance whenever we play r&b dance tunes, he was such good toy poodle/spaniel mix pup. I miss my buddy. So I'll say yes. -

Sat, July 28, 2007 - 5:51 PMWe used to keep a radio tuned to NPR for Jazz, Kitaro, and blues out in the barn. Bantie Chickens seem to respond as well as caprines....goat figure....
I always felt the Dead doing Merle's "Sing Me Back Home" is great returning-from-pasture music.....

Re: Do animals have musical taste?
Mon, December 1, 2008 - 8:04 AMNone of my dogs seem to notice music, but 2 of my indoor cats adore it.Nethier seem to fall for a particular style,I'm ecletic in my tastes and they seem to enjoy whatever I'm listening to.Metal doesn't bother them, they love women singers however, and rock music. One of my cats is blind and I've found music keeps her calm and serene, the other just goes into a trance with her eyes going all soft. And the motor starts *laughing*. -

Re: Do animals have musical taste?
Tue, December 2, 2008 - 2:45 PMmy cats do have taste! ... my old kitty really liked weird ambient electronic ... amon tobin .. and flurried classical pieces .. schumann ... low bass frequencies ... my current kitty is quite picky! ... he rubs against my guitar when he likes my playing ... he turns his nose up at me and gives me evil looks then leaves when he doesn't like my playing :)

Sun, December 14, 2008 - 6:32 PMI don't know if they ascribe meaning and feeling to music in the same way we, do but they do react in a visceral sort of way.
