WOW I just revisited one of my old Cat Stevens cd's last night and talk about finding god through music. What an amazing talent he had. I'm so glad to have been blessed with knowing this music at a young age. Sometimes I wish Cat Stevens had chosen to share his musical gifts for longer then he had. In the same sense however I respect that he finally did find God through music and then left music to devote himself to God. What an amazing spirit he has....his music truly touches my soul.

"On The Road To Find Out" By Cat Stevens

Well I left my happy home
to see what I could find out
I left my folk and friends
with the aim to clear my mind out

Well I hit the rowdy road
and many kinds I met there
and many stories told me on the way to get there

So on and on I go, the seconds tick the time out
So much left to know, and I'm on the road to find out

    In the end I'll know
but on the way I wonder
    through descending snow
and through the frost and thunder

I listen to the wind come howl
telling me I have to hurry
I listen to the robin's song
    saying not to worry

So on, and on I go, the seconds tick the time out
So much left to know, and I'm on the road to find out

    Well I found myself alone
    hoping someone would miss me
Thinking about my home and the last woman to kiss me

Well sometimes you have to moan
when nothing seems to suit you
but never the less you know
    your locked towards the future

So off and on you go, the seconds tick the time out
There's so much left to know and I'm on the road to find out

And I found my head one day
    when I wasn't even trying
and here I have to say
cause there is no use in lying, lying

    Yes the answer lies within
so why not take a look now
    Kick out the devils sin
pickup, pickup a good book now

    Yes the answer lies within
so why not take a look now
    kick out the devils sin
pickup, pickup a good book now

    Yes the answer lies within
so why not take a look now
    kick out the devils sin
pickup, pickup a good book now

He still has that talent. He's spreading the blessings through music to his Islamic Youth Choir. They are quite a vibrant and enthusiastic little bunch of voices.

Yusef Islam (the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens) continues to inspire people. He has gotten lots of bad press in his conversion to Islam, but when you hear what he says in his own words, you see the natural progression of his personal growth and a frank expression of his music and what it meant to him.

I find a similar parallel with Sinead O'Connor, now Mother Bernadett. There is a true searching in their music and both have suffered adverse criticism. Both seem to have found progressions out of the popular music industry, which is, if you look at it, all about money and consumerism.

We might want to take a look at that ourselves. Who are these recording artists we listen to? What is their motivation in making music? Is it Spirit? Ego? Money? How has this shaped their content?

I have found wonderful experiences in LIVE music of local artists. Jazz, Folk, Blues, HipHop, Rock, World Music... The less mediated by the industry, the more pure. The more real.

Get on that Road to Find Out. There's something Real out there.

      Salaam.

We just watched the Majikat DVD this weekend. It was a stocking stuffer. It was interesting to watch the performance (one of his last) and form one opinion about his last days, and then watch the interview at the end and gain an entirely different perception of what was happening inside him at that time.

Doesn't anyone know that in 1988 or 9 Ayatollah Komeini put out a Fatwa against Salman Rushdie calling for Muslim faithful to Kill Rushdie. Cat Stevens publicly endorsed this fatwa. What' spiritual about that?

he later rescinded his support of that fatwa~

the spirituality in Cat Stevens is evident in the songs themselves~ simple as that.
