Looking for Foley Artists

Hi..
I work for a children's museum in Baltimore, Port Discovery. One of my latest projects is centered around teaching children about sound effects, using only those items that they would normally find around their own home or classroom. What I am looking for is to locate an experienced Foley artist who can advise me on the gear that they would use and techniques that would be appropriate for young children, ages 6 to 12.

i play a 'Lucy scaled guitar' scaled to be the actual 'natural' scale as in whales, birds and dolphins etc sing/talk in this scale, it is very trippy

In the 17th century a man called John Harrison made some clocks so accurate that they where able to be used in diving longitude at sea... in a time when the best clocks where only with 15 minutes a day he built clocks that could go across the sea to Jamaica and be within minutes over the months of a voyage.

This man had a magnificent idea and that was the true scale of music must be made using PI (3.142....) In fact the two dimensional view of sound is still being thought today in schools even though it is inherently wrong...a string does not vibrate in two dimensions, it moves up and down AND around, when you see a 'sound wave' you are in fact looking at the two dimensional view of a three dimensional moving vortex.. more like a slinky or a corkscrew than a wave.

Harrison realised something about the true nature of things and was a true genius.... his clocks won him the 'kings prize' and saves thousands of lives by bringing security to sea travel.. but his musical scaling system was forgotten about until Charles Lucy discovered his writings in 87...

The writings of John harrison can be found at Charles Lucy's site (http://www.lucytune.com/) where he simplifies it into this...The essence of what Harrison said is as follows:

"The natural scale of music is associated with the ratio of the diameter of a circle to its circumference." (i.e. pi = 3.141 etc.)
"This scale is based on two intervals;"
1) The Larger note as he calls it; This is a ratio of 2 to the 2*pi root of 2, or in BASIC computer terms 2^(1/(2*pi)), which equals a ratio of 1.116633 or 190.9858 cents, approximately 1.91 frets on a conventional guitar. (L).
2) The lesser note, which is half the difference between five Larger notes (5L) and an octave. i.e.(2/(2^(1/(2*pi)))^5)^(1/2), giving a ratio of 1.073344 or 122.5354 cents, an interval of approx. 1.23 frets. (s).
The equivalent of the fifth (i.e. seventh fret on guitar) is composed of three Large (3L) plus one small note (s) i.e. (3L+s) = (190.986*3) + (122.535) = 695.493 cents or ratio of 1.494412.
The equivalent of the fourth (IV) (fifth fret) is 2L+s = 504.507 cents.

Anyhow how does this relate to this tribe ?.... well the answer is this. Harrison thought it was sacrilegious to worship God with the imperfect conventional scale and he trained a choir to sing in his scale. Knowing the scale as I do I imagine this would have been the most wonderful sound. Truly the lost music of the spheres !!

Tuva Camp 2008

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

THE CIRCLE OF FITHS

Do you think its possible to using the circle of fiths in music to draw a pentagram or a star of david (or any other religous symbol) in it and use those chords in a vibrational pattern to contact a spirit/divine being. I guess what im saying is instead of pentagrams and what not use the shape inside the circle of fiths to pick notes to play in an order. I would like to hear any positive feedback.

WOW I just revisited one of my old Cat Stevens cd's last night and talk about finding god through music. What an amazing talent he had. I'm so glad to have been blessed with knowing this music at a young age. Sometimes I wish Cat Stevens had chosen to share his musical gifts for longer then he had. In the same sense however I respect that he finally did find God through music and then left music to devote himself to God. What an amazing spirit he has....his music truly touches my soul.

The title describes the concept behind this masterpiece and refers to the scientific discipline Cymatics which is concerned with the influence of music on matter. I think that this has a lot to do with the magic experiences through music.

Islam, Sufism, and Sound

The heart of man has been so constituted by the Almighty that, like a flint, it contains a hidden fire which is evoked by music and harmony, and renders man beside himself with ecstasy. These harmonies are echoes of that higher world of beauty which we call the world of spirits; they remind man of his relationship to that world, and produce in him an emotion so deep and strange that he himself is powerless to explain it. The effect of music and dancing is deeper in proportion as the natures on which they act are simple and prone to motion; they fan into a flame whatever love is already dormant in the heart, whether It be earthly and sensual, or divine and spiritual.

Accordingly there has been much dispute among theologians as to the lawfulness of music and dancing regarded as religious exercises. One sect, the Zahirites, holding that Allah is altogether incommensurable with man, deny the possibility of man's really feeling love to Allah, and say that he can only love those of his own species. If he does feel what he thinks is love to his Creator they say it is a mere projection, or shadow cast by his own fantasy, or a reflection of love to the creature; music and dancing, according to them, have only to do with creature love, and are therefore unlawful as religious exercises. If we ask them what is the meaning of that "love to Allah" which is enjoined by the religious law, they reply that it means obedience and worship. This is an error which we hope to confute in a later chapter dealing with the love of Allah. At present we content ourselves with saying that music and dancing do not put into the heart what is not there already, but only fan into a flame dormant emotions. Therefore if a man has in his heart that love to Allah which the law enjoins, it is perfectly lawful, nay, laudable in him to take part in exercises which promote it. On the other hand, if his heart is full of sensual desires, music and dancing will only increase them, and are therefore unlawful for him. While, if he listens to them merely as a matter of amusement, they are neither lawful nor unlawful, but indifferent. For the mere fact that they are pleasant does not make them unlawful any more than the pleasure of listening to the singing of birds or looking at green grass and running water is unlawful. The innocent character of music and dancing, regarded merely as a pastime, is also corroborated by an authentic tradition which we have from the Lady Ayesha, who narrates: "One festival-day some Negroes were performing in a mosque. The Prophet said to me, 'Do you wish to see them?' I replied, 'Yes.' Accordingly he lifted me up with his own blessed hand, and I looked on so long that he said more than once, 'Have not you had enough of watching?"

Another authentic tradition narrates what follows: "One festival day two girls came to my house and began to play and sing. The Prophet came in and lay down on the couch turning his face away. Presently Abu Bakr entered, and seeing the girls playing, exclaimed, 'What! the pipe of Satan in the Prophet's house!' Whereupon the Prophet turned and said, 'Let them alone, Abu Bakr, for this is a festival-day'."

Passing over the cases where music and dancing rouse into a flame evil desires already dormant in the heart, we come to those cases where they are quite lawful. Such are those of the pilgrims who celebrate the glories of the House of Allah at Mecca in song, and thus incite others to go on pilgrimage, and of mi nstrels whose music and songs stir up martial ardour in the breasts of their auditors and incite them to fight against infidels. Similarly, mournful music which excites sorrow for sin and failure in religious life is lawful; of this nature was the music of David. But dirges which increase sorrow for the dead are not lawful, for it is written in the Qur'an, "Despair not over what you have lost." On the other hand, joyful music at weddings and feasts and on such occasions as a circumcision or the return from a journey is lawful.

We come now to the purely religious use of music and dancing: such is that of who by this means stir up in themselves greater love towards Allah, and, by means of music, often obtain spiritual visions and ecstasies, their heart becoming in this condition as clean as silver in the flame of a furnace, and attaining a degree of purity which could never be attained by any amount of mere outward austerities. The Sufi then becomes so keenly aware of his relationship to the spiritual world that he loses all consciousness of this world, and often falls down senseless.

It is not, however, lawful for the aspirant to Sufism to take part in this mystical dancing without the permission of his "Pir," or spiritual director. It is related of the Sheikh Abu'l Qasim Girgani that, when one of his disciplines requested leave to take part in such a dance, he said, "Keep a strict fast for three days; then let them cook for you tempting dishes; if then, you still prefer the "dance," you may take part in it." The disciple, however, whose heart is not thoroughly purged from earthly desires, though he may have obtained some glimpse of the Mystics' path, should be forbidden by his director to take part in such dances, as they will do him more harm than good.

Those who deny the reality of the ecstasies and other spiritual experiences of the Sufis merely betray their own narrow-mindedness and shallow insight. Some allowance, however, must be made for them, for it is as, difficult to believe in the reality of states of which one has no personal experience as it is for a blind man to understand the pleasure of looking at green grass and running water, or for a child to comprehend the pleasure of exercising sovereignty. A wise man, though he himself may have no experience of those states, will not therefore deny their reality, for what folly can be greater than his who denies the reality of a thing merely because he himself has not experienced it! Of such people it is written in the Qur'an, "Those who have not the guidance will say, 'This is a manifest imposture.'"

As regards the erotic poetry which is recited in Sufi gatherings, and to which people sometimes make objection, we must remember that, when in such poetry mention is made of separation from or union with the beloved, the Sufi, who is an adept in the love of Allah, applies such expressions to separation from or union with Him. Similarly, "dark locks" are taken to signify the darkness of unbelief; "the brightness of the face," the light of faith, and drunkenness the Sufi's ecstasy. Take, for instance, the verse:

Thou may'st measure out thousands of measures of wine, But, till thou drink it, no joy is thine.

By this the writer means that the true delights of religion cannot be reached by way of formal instruction, but by felt attraction and desire. A man may converse much and write volumes concerning love, faith, piety, and so forth, and blacken paper to any extent, but till he himself possesses these attributes all this will do him no good. Thus, those who find fault with the Sufis for being powerfully affected, even to ecstasy, by these and similar verses, are merely shallow and uncharitable. Even camels are sometimes so powerfully affected by the Arab-songs of their drivers that they will run rapidly, bearing heavy burdens, till they fall down in a state of exhaustion.

The Sufi bearer, however, is in danger of blasphemy if he applies some of the verses which he hears to Allah. For instance, if he hears such a verse as "Thou art changed from thy former inclination," he must not apply it to Allah, who cannot change, but to himself and his own variations of mood. Allah is like the sun, which is always shining, but sometimes for us His light is eclipsed by some object which intervenes between us and Him.

Regarding some adepts it is related that they attain to such a degree of ecstasy that they lose themselves in Allah. Such was the case with Sheikh Abu'l Hassan Nuri, who, on hearing a certain verse, fell into an ecstatic condition, and, coming into a field full of stalks of newly cut sugar-canes, ran about till his feet were wounded and bleeding, and, not long afterwards, expired. In such cases some have supposed that there occurs an actual descent of Deity into humanity, but this would be as great a mistake as that of one who, having for the first time seen his reflection in a mirror should suppose that, somehow or other, be had become incorporated with the mirror, or that the red-and-white hues which the mirror reflects were qualities inherent in it.

I'd have to say that some of the most transcendental music moments I've had were sitting next to my master tabla teacher, Harihar Rao, as he played so incredibly fast it would make your hair stand on end. The Indian violinist, L Subramanium, is pretty incredible too. You realize that the music is coming from much more than left-brain intellect.

Please pray for us

I was seeing a young woman recently who has had a very rough life. She has two children already. Five weeks into our relationship, she tells me that she's pregnant. We had a discussion about the option of an abortion, which essentially led to the end of our relationship. This woman is addicted to stress, and is in a state of adrenal exhaution. It seems to me that she intentionally brings in people (and circumstances) that hurt her and pushes away those that could help her. I've shown her what she suffers from and how to fix it, and she's admitted that I'm right, but will not follow simple suggestions that could help her. I haven't spoken to her since Christmas after she kicked me out of her house, but since that happened she's been diagnosed with Cancer.
I take care of my younger adopted sister who has FAS, RAD, Tourettes', Pica (she'll eat bottlecaps or anything), hyperflexive disorder, a growth hormone deficiency, and has been diagnosed as bipolar, schizephrenic, and autistic. She is also suffering from the side-effects of drugs the "doctors" prescribed her for bullshit she doesn't even have. The good news with this though is that we found a new advocate who might be able to talk the state into giving her way more money, so that some holistic approach to her health might be undertaken. THANK YOU GOD!!!
My father's health is ailing. He's 61 but he went in to have his "real age" or "biological age" tested, and it was 100. He's all fuct up. Suffering pretty bad. He thinks he's in the final stages of renal failure, but is still stubborn about going to the hospital. I fell for him and am worried about him.
As for me, I'm cool. I'm jsut accutely aware of what's happening in the world, and how although history's repeating itself again, this juncture in history is still completely unprecendented, and may very well lead to a total overhaul of human conciousness, and therefore, civillization. My dreams I know will come true, but right now seem "stuck." Since I was six it's been my goal to "make the world all better," and I've chose music as a preferred method when I was 11. Right now i just have too may personal obligations to pursue it with the level of energy I'd like to. Plus, I'm accutely aware of the situation that humanity finds itself in currently, which is frightening when viewed from a historical perspective.

So, what I ask of you is this: please imagine us LIVING IT UP and everything being how we'd like it to be, and do the same thing for yourselves, and then like Jesus said, "thank the lord as if your prayer had already been answered, and so it shall be" (or something like that.)

Help build the greatest open mic of all time: The Intracosmic Resonance Funk Factory!!!

Ok, so the idea is this, bear with me now. To create a roving stage upon which any vocalist, string musician, or (tunable) drum player can perform upon, for Burningman. This stage will incorporate Light, Sacred Geometry, and the principle of "inherent resonance." The stage will resonate simultaneously, different octaves of natural cycles. The earth's resonance signature (magnetic pulses emmited by earth) is a higher octave of a solar year. The stage will have a digital billboard on it that will show moving sacred patterns, at an exact level of overall output, the frequency of which will resonate with, (by the power of the octave) Tonal hooks, (performed impromtu, or recorded earlier) which will resonate with the beat, which will resonate with the earth, which resonates (because of schumann waves) with our bodies. The frequency I'm talking about here corresponds to the tone, "Om." The stage will incorporate resonance with other natural cycles as well, as well as dissonant movements to cause people to experience the dissonance (as opposed to resonance) in their bodies. It will play multilevel resonant enlivening tunes @ dawn, and will play the multilevel resonant "Om" @ sunset.

TRANCE

Greetings all yee worshippers of music. I am curious to hear about people's experience attaining trance state while performing music, dancing, listening, etc.
My own personal expereinces have been through drumming and singing. Usually while drumming for at leaste 30 minutes to an hour, my identity is gone. I have had numerous visualizations, or sensations of my body being taken over by an older entity. This entity is usually a male, African tribesman. I feel as though I am transported back to a past life. There are moments where I get thrown back into my body and look down at my hands, wondering how I am creating the rhythms. They were not taught to me, they just happen.

I can absolutely feel God through music! Even when it's not even Gospel or inspirational sometimes. I can listen to ColdPlay & Sade and still feel him talking to me. Music is almost like another language amongst artist.

communication with angels (or aliens?) through musica

sometimes when i am writing music, (particularly of the electronica realm) i feel like i am channeling entities of a non-human nature, and it reflects in the finished product. often i feel i am only channeling messages from another dimension and not actually using only my own abilities to express myself. then it ends up being a collaboration between myself and the unknown.

this is nothing new. as long as music has existed for humans, producing, playing and dancing to music has always had ethereal connections.
not to mention every religion i know of has musical connections.

i believe soon in the future we may have a universal language through sound waves that even other entities are trying to teach us as we live in the present, and very important messages are hidden in the music that is being channeled. word.

my friend Nick was one of the musicians at the event, here is what he
had to say....
"Last night, I was booked to play an event about an hour outside of
Salt Lake City, Utah. The hype behind this show was huge, they presold
700 tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total. The promoters
did an amazing job with the show.. they even made slipmats with the
flyers on them to promote in local shops.So, we got to the show around
11:15 or so and it was really cool. It was all outdoors, in a valley
surrounded by huge mountains. They had an amazing light show flashing
on to a mountain behind the site, the sound was booming, the crowd was
about 1500 people thick and everything just seemed too good to be true
really. Well...At about 11:30 or so, I was standing behind the stage
talking with someone when I noticed a helicopter pulling over one of
the mountain tops. I jokingly said "Oh look, here comes big brother" to
the person I was with. I wasn't far off.

The helicopter dipped lower and lower and started shining its lights on
the crowd. I was kind of in awe and just sat and watched this thing
circle us for a minute. As I looked back towards the crowd I saw a guy
dressed in camoflauge walking by, toting an assault rifle. At this
point, everyone was fully aware of what was going on . A few "troops"
rushed the stage and cut the sound off and started yelling that
everyone "get the fuck out of here or go to jail". This is where it got
really sticky.No one resisted. That's for sure. They had police dogs
raiding the crowd of people and I saw a dog signal out a guy who
obviously had some drugs on him. The soldiers attacked the guy (4 of
them on 1), and kicked him a few times in the ribs and had their knees
in his back and sides. As they were cuffing him, there was about 1000
kids trying to leave in the backdrop, peacefully. Next thing I know, A
can of fucking TEAR GAS is launched into the crowd. People are running
and screaming at this point. Girls are crying, guys are cussing... bad
scene.Now, this is all I saw with my own eyes, but I heard plenty of
other accounts of the night. Now this isnt gossip I heard from some
candy raver, these are instances cited straight out of the promoters
mouth..-

One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by one
of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the police
tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH.- The
police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying to
document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy filming
and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and luckily.. his
friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless footage. That's not
all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to be more footage.- The
police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main promoter
went up to them with the permit for the show and said "here, I have the
permit." The police then said, "no you don't" and ripped the permit out
of his hand. Then, they put an assault rifle to his forehead and said
"get the fuck out of here right now."Now.. let's get the facts straight
here.This event was 100% legal. They had every permit the city told
them they needed. They had a 2 MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy for the
event. They had liscenced security guards at the gates confiscating any
alcohol or drugs found upon entry (yes, they searched every car on the
way in). Oh, I suppose I should mention that they arrested all the
security guards for possession.

Oh another interesting fact.. the police did not have a warrant. The
owner of the land already has a lawsuit against the city for something
similar. A few months ago, she rented her land for a party and the
police raided that as well. And catch this, the police forced her to
LEAVE HER OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY. That's right. They didnt arrest her,
but made her leave her own property!!!Don't get it twisted, this is all
going down in probably THE most conservative state in the USA. And this
is scary.. a gross violation of our civil liberties. The police wanted
this party shut down, so they made it happen. Even though everything
about this event was legal. The promoters spent over $ 20,000 on this
show and did everything they had to to make it legit, only to have it
taken away from them by a group of radical neo-con's with an
agenda.This was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed in
person.

I can't even begin to describe how surreal it was. Helicopters, assault
rifles, tear gas, camoflauge-wearing soldiers.... why? Was that really
necessary?This needs to be big news across the USofA. At least in our
music scene (edm as a whole)... this could happen to any of us at any
time. When we're losing the right to gather peacefully, we're also
letting the police set a standard of what we can get away with. And I
think that's BULLSHIT!The system fucked up last night... They broke up
a party that was 100% legal and they physically hurt a lot of people
there at the same time. The promoters already have 6 lawsuits ready to
file with their lawyers and the ACLU is already involved.I'm sure some
pictures (and hopefully some video) will surface soon. I'll make sure
to post them up here on 404, so you can see the Police State of America
at work."

Blair Hansen - until Sarah McLachlan switches sides...

So I was reading about this local singer-songwriter's webpage that characterized her music as "somewhere between the Dixie Chicks and Sarah McLachlan.” Uh huh. Tall order, I'd say.

But Blair Hansen is the real deal. She writes the lyrics (amazing) - the music (addictive pop/folk acoustic) - she plays the guitar (a natural who just finished her official 6th lesson) - and she's only 18. And did I mention that she kind of looks like Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks?

I listened to her songs on her website (www.blairhansen.com) - which I couldn't stop playing. Must buy CD. Must buy CD.

I went to see her play with her band at the Stork in Oakland a couple of weeks ago. Holy Cow! She is really that good. The kind of good that makes you stop in your tracks and say "This one's got it." A great live set balanced well with rock 'n roll, folk, and pop. It was like watching a young Melissa Etheridge before she broke big.

I bought a CD and it made the rounds with Delerium, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, and Le Tigre. I have to say that this CD leaves me wanting more. Lucky enough, the young prodigy is almost finished with her second album.

Check her out. She's playing at Coffee for Thought in Alameda Friday night (for those of you who are seeing Ani on Saturday). She's also playing at the Stork in Oakland on February 27.

Get this 'ish!

Hi all. Good to see such beautifully thought out remarks on this world wide web of ours. It's not entirely common enough.

My Name is Joshua and I am a singer / guitarist / songwriter / turntable freak and all around music addict and I have a problem. (Wow...AA) Well, maybe not a serious problem, but it's something that irks me from time to time. Here goes...

So, I write (music, prose, poetry...whatevers), but I find it nearly impossible to actually get myself sat down and motivated to write in any way when I am happy, content or pleased with anything. I am a bit on the emo side of things, but emo-kids can be happy, I swear to it. So, what I wonder is if anyone out there has this trouble too. It's not that I think that the pleasurable things in life aren't worth writing about or anything, but more or less that I don't seem to need to vent the good times like I do the bad (reasonably so). When times are at their worst, I am always at it...working on something. However, when everything is its peachiest, the note books and guitars are far away. I even spin records better when I'm depresso or angry. It's not something that's ruining my life or anything, as the work that I put out on bad days is often fairly decent by my way too high stansards for myself, but it is something that I would like to understand better myself. I understand that hitting the issues (in whatever way) head-on, while times are hard on me, is a great way to release the stress and allow it all to filter out and leave me of peaceful and sound mind. However, wouldn't exploring the yang to my yin help to keep the beauty and life in everything positive near to me through the rough times? It would make sense, but it doesn't happen...the 'ish just don't work right. I sit down on a beautiful day, one in which no one in their right mind could be upset, and I can't write/play/mix. Everything turns totally annoying and shallow and my words/notes/chords/mixes don't convey the meaning that I intend.

Any takes on this predicament? I'm sure someone can dredge up some beautiful thought about this and hopefully reply.

You know I just finished fasting for 7 days, & I noticed that by the end of the fast my sensibilities had changed, with me prefering much softer, quieter, pretty & contemplative sounds..

now that I'm back on solid foods (& coffee!) the accompanying rush of energy has me reaching for more appropriately energetic music...banghra, the pixies, slightly more 'challenging' dissonant (but still visceral) sounds....

Maybe the link is obvious, but it still seems somehow especially interesting... your sensibility is informed by what you put in your body, your lifestyle, your stress levels...among other things.

So many people identify themselves by the music they listen to...

What are they really identifying themselves as/with??

Finally come into self through music...

Hi to all the music lovas out there! I've been in this group for a little bit now, but this is my first post on this tribe. I have read so many rad posts on this tribe, and have been really inspired by the words of the others in this group with the same passion as I have.
My experience with music like all of you is so powerful! I'm a pretty shy person, but when the music turns on and and I start to dance I become so comfortable with myself that I become an exhibitionist. I go to clubs where I love the music and will dance all night. I will meet people at clubs who I don't even know and we won't even speak, but once we start dancing we just connect on this mystical level. I feel that music has always done a lot of my speaking. From one creative DJ to one creative musician I feel I can say all I need to say with there music. It's the one place in my life where I don't feel timid to the world.
I'm glad to be part of this tribe and love the words of you all!

Also can anyone recommend some more music to me.
I really like music like Massive Attack, Delirium, Lorenna Mckeenit, Theivery Cooperation, etc.... Middle Eastern/ Tribal Electonica, Trance. I seem to find music and will listen to it endless amounts of time and want to find some new stuff to do the same with.

Healing Music

Greetings everybody.

I'm a tribe newbie and I just want to make my introduction. You all seem so wonderful!

I am a professional musician, (I actually pay my bills by performing) and I am happy to connect with musicians of all levels.

Music is my prayer. I connect with Spirit in music. My love started young, learning the western traditions with piano, guitar, chorus, musical theater. Later I learned a deep and profound power when I lived in West Africa for a couple years.

The West African musical tradition is rich in spiritual connection. Originally studying Djembe, I fell in love with the Kora, the 21-string harp used by the griots of the great kingdom of Mali. It is a mystical instrument that takes time to learn, but it is truly a sublime instrument of spiritual power.

I also have learned to play the Dan Tranh, the 17-string zither of my own homeland, Vietnam. With the Dan Tranh I connect deeply with my ancestors and convey the indominable strength and spirit of my people. The sound of the Dan Tranh; the pentatonic major scale, the smoothly bending notes, the glissando of running over the row of strings... all this can bring the mind and heart into a meditative state as well as bring great joy.

These instruments reach in and grab the listener on an emotive level. I frequently play them during healing sessions (I also am a practitioner of acupuncture/Chinese medicine).

I have learned to play these instruments under the guidance of masters of the traditions. This teacher/student relationship itself produces profound spiritual growth.

I hope to find fellow musicians here that play in Spirit. I love to jam, network and exchange ideas.

My story...

Hey there, I wanted to get the ball rolling so I will tell my favorite experience. I would really love to hear everyone else’s so please tell yours too....

It was the night of the burn 2002 after the man had fallen and I was with my two closest friends. We wondered through the desert for a short time and ended up at a piece of art called "Queequeg's Coffin". When we arrived there, we were the only people there. The art installation was an organ, a hammock and a few sculptures. I sat down at the organ and played for a little until I began singing. I became so lost in singing that I had lost all sense of time. I felt so free to begin with from all the experiences of being at Burning Man that it took no time for me to completely open my heart while I was singing and playing the organ. After a short while, I truly felt the most amazing feeling I’ve ever felt to this day. I felt that I was channeling the purest of white light from my soul. At that moment, I felt connected to God and the ether. I had gone somewhere else within and outward at the same time. The closest feeling I could relate it to, is pure love but I could feel God pouring through me. It almost felt like I was a vessel the universe was speaking through.
Once I came to, I was surrounded by 40 or more people watching me. I had no idea that anyone was there except for my two friends.
Since that experience, I have been able to tap into that feeling while playing music and I feel forever blessed that I was able to experience such a blissful encounter with music.

Also, I must add that I was sober so this was not a drug induced experience….

I just started reading a wonderful book by Hazarat Inayat Khan called the music of life. It is a wonderful book that links the vibration of life, god, science and music. Here's a little description...

But people can.
If the music is in the wrong hands, it creates wrongdoing...

Is there a fake music?
No there is not.

People are fakes, the music is a helpless tool in their hands?

Can the music make money?
No, the music is free.

But people are making millions from it, and growing fat....

Can the music change lives?

Yes it did, does, and will continue to do so.....

Can we trust music?

Yes, and more than any president or government....

Is there such thing as music heroes?
Yes there is.

People, who selflessly devote their lives on perfecting the art of music, are no less heroes, then people who defend their country, or save a life.

Does the music stops us from suicide?
Yes it does.

Without music, there is nothing really to live for.
